Widespread Flooding in Pakistan
Torrential rains during monsoon season has left at least 1,000 persons dead in Pakistan. The scale of the disaster appears to be beyond the capacity of the government of Pakistan to respond alone.

UCC launches $300,000 Appeal for Pakistan
Today the United Church of Christ issued a special disaster appeal seeking $300,000 to support the emergency relief and long-term rehabilitation initiatives of Church World Service in Pakistan.

Pakistan flooding worsens
SITUATION: The death toll from Pakistan's worsening floods has risen to 1,400, with the flood worsening as raging river waters move from the northwest part of the country to the Punjab - the nation's agricultural heartland - and to Sindh, Reuters' AlertNet reported. Hundreds of villages have been submerged; at least 1.5 million have been displaced and that number is expected to increase. In all, more than 3.2 million people are in some way affected by the flooding.

August 29, 2010 marks the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. As we commemorate and recognize this fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina; as we remember the flooding, devastation and pain of people whose lives were changed forever; as we pray for people who are still living in FEMA trailers or in inadequate rental properties; as we remember those who died and their families…please also remember the hope brought to people through the faithfulness of UCC members and friends.

These are the ingredients of an unprecedented oil spill and its aftermath three months after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico.

Organizations Come Together in Support of Legislation to Protect Victims of BP's Gulf Gusher
(New Orleans, LA) More than twenty organizations, ranging from national civil rights groups to local grass roots community organizations, have signed on to support the proposed Gulf Coast Oil Spill Legal Liabilities and Claims Act of 2010, which would protect the legal rights of parties who have suffered financial losses or economic hardship as a result of the explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon and the massive oil spill that has followed.

Back Bay Mission: The Capping of an Oil Well
So now it’s capped. The new 75-ton cap placed onto the spewing oil well appears to be doing the job it was intended to do as the test period draws to a close. Although some bubbles escaping from the valve are current cause for concern, indications for the moment are positive. For the first time since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded on April 20 out in the Gulf of Mexico, no oil is gushing into the waters of the Gulf.

Gulf Oil Spill
The United Church of Christ National Disaster Ministries is preparing to assist in the response to the oil spill along the Gulf. The UCC has worked on technology-caused disasters for ten years and is monitoring the situation to determine how best to respond.
