This committee supervises and correlates the missionary plans and activities of the Church and its organizations. It stimulates an intelligent missionary spirit in the membership of the Church, in order to bring the teachings of the Christian faith to bear on the economic, cultural, social and political problems at home and abroad, and gives the Church direction and inspiration for individual and authorized corporate action.
BACKPACK COLLECTION FOR COVENANT TO CARE, 2010
One local mission which the Mission-Social Action Committee coordinates is a covenant between Covenant to Care for Children, a DCF Social Worker, and our church. The Congregational Church of Plainville, United Church of Christ is part of the Covenant to Care for Children's Adopt a Social Worker program which matches individual religious congregations of any faith tradition with a State of Connecticut child protective services social worker. The purpose of the match is to support a specific DCF social worker and to meet the unmet needs of abused, neglected, and severely impoverished children in the local community. Throughout the year, the needs identified by a State of Connecticut social worker who is matched with the Congregational Church are met through the abundance and generosity of church members. In late summer, the need is for new backpacks, school supplies, public school uniforms, and shoes for the social worker’s young clients so that they are well equipped to start the new school year. For the sixth year, the Mission-Social Action Committee has organized the gathering of new backpacks and school materials. On Sunday, August 22, 2010, the church concluded its annual Back-to-School Backpack Drive by packing 36 backpacks full with school supplies for local children and collecting $350 for public school uniforms and shoes. Members and friends of the church donated and filled 36 backpacks following the morning worship service, and provided gift cards for several of the children to purchase school uniforms and shoes. Our DCF social worker, Lynn Ludwin distributed the backpacks to her school-age clients for their first day of school. View picture.
After the backpacks were all packed and most loaded into the social worker’s car, the picture above was snapped. From left to right: Sarah Heap-Crosby, Fran Heap, Jackson & Robin Anderson, Rinette Yanez, DCF Social Worker Lynn Ludwin, and Grace & Kelly Perrotti.
